Counselling or coaching — how do you know which one you need?

Not sure whether you need counselling or coaching? You're not alone, and the honest answer is that the line isn't always sharp. Here's how to think about it.

When people first get in touch, one of the most common questions we hear is: "I'm not sure if I need counselling or coaching. What's the difference?"

The simplest way to think about it

Counselling tends to look backwards and inwards — it explores past experiences, emotions, and patterns that might be affecting how you feel today.

Coaching tends to look forwards and outwards — it focuses on where you want to go, what's getting in your way, and how to get there.

What counselling is for

Counselling is designed to help you work through emotional difficulty. It's the right space when something is hurting. It may help when you're carrying grief, anxiety, trauma, relationship pain, or a sense of being stuck in ways that feel emotional rather than practical. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.

Counselling isn't about being given answers. It's about being supported in finding your own. This is what makes the change last.

Counselling might be the right fit if:

  • you're experiencing anxiety, low mood, depression, or grief
  • you're struggling with the emotional aftermath of a difficult event
  • relationship difficulties are weighing on you
  • you've noticed patterns in your behaviour you'd like to understand
  • something from your past feels like it's following you into the present

What coaching is for

Coaching is less about healing and more about growing. It's the right space when you broadly feel okay emotionally but want to move forward — whether in your career, your relationships, your confidence, or your sense of purpose.

Coaching doesn't require you to revisit difficult experiences from your past. It starts from where you are now and focuses on where you want to be.

Coaching might be the right fit if:

  • you're at a crossroads
  • you want to develop your confidence
  • you know you have potential but feel blocked
  • you're looking for accountability and a thinking partner

When it gets blurry

Life doesn't divide neatly into emotional issues and practical goals. At The Real Self, we are comfortable holding this complexity. If you come in unsure, we'll talk it through in your initial consultation.

One useful question

When you imagine the ideal outcome of working with someone, what does it look like?

  • "I want to feel better" → Counselling.
  • "I want to do better" → Coaching.
  • "Both" → We can help you figure it out.
